In Midipants Studio (my very own recording studio) I’ve started working on writing songs for “The One Thing” (aka Album number four.) I’ve decided to start blogging the process.  For a hobbyist, my CD’s have sold OK… I’ve sold out of all three CD’s at CDBaby, but they’re still in stock on iTunes.  Still need to get more made and send them to Seattle.  The last copy of Never Completely went to some fan in Japan.  People still buy physical CD’s?  Yeah, some still do.

I have three or four songs hanging around, waiting to be recorded.  Should I release each song as a free download as I finish them?  Should I wait until I have at least ten songs?  Should I give any or all of the songs away, or should I charge money for them?  And of course the correct answer to all of those questions is “who cares!”

Shouldn’t I care?  Giving away your art for free devalues it and blah blah blah.  Does it?

Here’s what I will end up doing – As I finish a song, I’ll post it online for free.  Once I finish the next song, I’ll take down the previous song and put up the new one.  Once the whole album is done I’ll send it to CDBaby and be done with it.  I’ll do a limited run of CDs because some people still love them.

I think you can drive yourself nuts worrying about marketing and all of that crap.  The lizard brain loves to get you to think about all of those details when you should be writing music.

Speaking of which, I’m off.  Lyrics don’t write themselves.  Mostly.
