I put out a video on the Budget Guitarist YouTube channel that you might be interested in.  Otherwise, please continue reading.  Or… why not both?

Ah.  The wonderful Fender Stratocaster.  It’s the Chevy Nova of the electric guitar world, meaning it’s easy and fun to mod.  And I’ve tried almost all of the mods there are.  But today’s mod was of a practical nature.

The Strat has a volume knob and two tone knobs.  The volume knob is for the entire guitar, and the two tone knobs are for adjusting tone on two of the three pickups.  This always struck me as weird.  Anyway, for whatever reason, I keep banging the side of my hand into the volume knob, which is located right next to the bridge pickup.  This is arranged so that a guitarist can wrap their pinkie around the volume knob and do neato swells with the guitar.  Except I almost never do that, and when I do, I use a volume pedal because it’s more practical for me.

So what to do?  Remove the knob and rewire the two lower knobs to be volume and tone.  Problem solved.  I went and got a wiring diagram from this wonderful website:

Then I opened the guitar up and made the mods.  But the most important mod was what to do about the hole in the pickguard.  So I asked my daughter for a sticker, as you do, and solved the problem.
